Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment (endodontics) at Al Dana Specialist Medical center

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a procedure designed to eliminate infection (of the pulp) and save a tooth that has been severely damaged or decayed. Cavities affect the enamel or the surface of the tooth. Underneath them there are soft tissue, nerves, and blood vessels that help the tooth grow and develop.
If that pulp becomes inflamed or infected – due to deep decay, a crack or chip that allowed bacteria to penetrate the tooth, or trauma — the dentist can save the tooth by cleaning and disinfecting it, and then sealing it. In some cases, the tooth will be protected with a dental crown or cap.

What happens if I don’t treat my root canals?

Left untreated, infected tooth pulp can cause pain, fever, chills, and potentially lead to an abscess. The infection can also spread to the surrounding tissue and jawbone, causing swelling and even serious complications like obstruction of the airway. Most commonly, the damage to the tooth will be so severe that it will have to be extracted. Dentists will always recommend trying to save a tooth to avoid chewing or speech problems linked to missing teeth.
